Dog Drawings

Dog drawings are done with same approach as with the human portraits and figures. Here is my demo on how to draw dogs. Without doing any lay-ins, or preliminary outlines, I started this pencil drawing by indicating the ear first, trying to make a confident mark even though I felt a bit unsure, as I did not do any lay-ins, as this is also a good way to learn to draw.

Then proceeded down from there ,comparing the other areas and features with the a mark, analyzing the differences in distances, value relationships, etc. I have briefly indicated the eyes, the nose, and drew a line to begin indicating the torso of the dog.I moved along fast and confidently to keep the drawing fresh and sketchy. I was using a pencil called Ebony which is great for producing both darks and lights by easily pressing and releasing on the pencil-very easy to control the execution of values (darks and lights)

Then i lightly layed in the rest of the figure, placing everything, the legs, hips, etc. As you can see, for the rest of the areas, I decided to play it safer by sketching them in lightly first, instead of continuing with the solid marks. This way ,after the lay-in is established, it makes it a lot easier to finish a drawing and can have more fun with it instead of worrying if you would have the correct proportions and whatnot.

Here, I began toning and shading on top of the lightly layed in marks I have previously established. I started to add some shading with the full value, with the Ebony pencil ( which is great for doing dog drawings ). and defined the legs some more with the dark accents.I also gave it some tone to the background behind the dog's head to make it pop out more.

I went back to the face and developed the features some more. adding some shading to the background to make the head pop out more as well. I basically kept defining and detailing the piece, giving it better texture, smoothing and blending things out, concentrating on making it look good in general
I just continued developing everything more, working my way down, the torso, detailing out more with more features and textures.

Continued polishing and rendering, also added some ground planes and indications of the ground to have the dog stand on a plane instead of floating about in surface, as I do with all my dog drawings Hope this demo can help you how to draw a dog
