Dragon Drawing

For this dragon drawing, I started with the eye shape without any previous lay-in. Usually I would start by lightly laying in the general understructure and the form of the subject but inorder to keep this demonstration a quick sketch, I have decided to just go ahead and be spontaneous and free. The eyes of dragons are percing and mysterious looking, so I have kept that in mind to feel it out onto the paper. Really feeling whatever you are drawing out helps a lot especially when you are not really sure what you are doing. So just let go and be free , put down with agression with sure marks.

Then I placed the other eye, then wet up to placing the horn, comparing everything from that one eye that i started with.Since I had one eye sure and completed, it was easy to locate other areas ,making clean comparison relating to that one eye. Keeping things sure and clean really helps with sketching techniques, especially when you are drawing such mythical creature such as a dragon, because no on ereally knows the forms of a dragon for sure.Besides the eyes and the horn, I also focused on giving a n=ice brow ridge for my dragon. Rather large and monster-like brow ridge definitely added character to this dragon drawing.
I continued the process introducing the jaw. I moved along quickly without wavering the line qualities. I kept moving on and ket my first marks be its last. I was aiming to do a fresh clean sketch rather than another finished rendering.I also created the nose, making it sort of like a pigs nose. Pig's nose and dragon's nose are pretty similar as you can see. The jaw really gave special character to this dragon, making him look very mean and fiery. I wanted to give it a look where it can shoot fire out of its mouth at any minute. I wanted to make this dragon drawing very dangerous and vibrant looking. Not only the subject but the way i drew it, using free agressive daring marks also aided in making the drawing dangerous. Because you dont really want a cute dragon drawing. do you?
The tongue, the mustache, the hair to ad more character do the dragon.I didnt do any shadings on this sketch a it is more of a character drawing , I felt shadings may complicate things. The tongue gave a nice lively character to the dragon. It really aided in making the thing look more alive and not just a simple drawing. I was trying to decide if the dragon's tongues were like that of a snake or not, but I decided to make t more like that of a dog, just thought it looked better that way than a pointy and narrow snake-like tongure. I also added hair to give more character to the dragon. Also to show that it is no baby dragon, but a mature one. So the gray or white hair did the job.I also began lightly indicating the torso or the body of this dragon drawing and was trying to decide how I should make it turn or move about. The whiskers were done very quickly with just 4 fresh marks, but it really added a lot of character and made a huge difference to this dragon drawing. It was really fun to do it too. I really felt it through, the whiskers blowing away by the wind, and tried to make it look as if it is in action. The teeth also added a lot of character to the mouth, making it look more dangerous and mean. I did not over do ,or overmodel on the teeth. For example, I did not draw the separation lines of the teeth but just outlines the general shape of the overall teeth to keep thing ssimple and more informative as well, (less is more).
Continued down to the body, adding gills and patterns, etc. The body was fun to draw . I made it spiral, the gesture was fun to so. I wanted to give illusion of it moving continuously and a very long appearance, also powerful and snakelike. I added the gills to give the body more character, also the patterns, to design and make it look better to finish off the dragon drawing.
Also try drawing using the colored pencil as well. Giving the dragon its color sreally adds a new look and more character to the creature. I would stick with greenish hue myself.
